Reminders that hold
when the day won’t.
I didn't set out to build a brand. I started LaClave Creative because I needed something I couldn't find anywhere.
I know what a heavy day looks like from the inside. It's the meeting that takes something out of you and hands nothing back. It's the project that mattered six months ago and now just sits there. It's the afternoon you notice you've been going through the motions, and you can't say how long it's been.
None of it looks dramatic from the outside. That's part of why it's so easy to carry alone.
I wanted something on my desk for days like that. Something honest, without hype, that reminded me why the work was worth doing when the meaning had gone quiet. I couldn't find it, so I started making it.
That's where this brand began, not with a business plan. With a need I couldn't fill anywhere else.
Where This Comes From
I know what it feels like when work opens something in you. I spent years doing graphic design inside my day job, and in those hours, something came alive. The problems engaged me. The thinking was visual and real. I would sit down to design and feel, briefly, like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. The rest of the week was a different experience. More than twenty years in a phone center, helping people navigate hospital systems, doing work that is real and demanding, but that closed something in me, the design work opened. That gap is something I know from the inside.
I also know what it looks like to keep showing up anyway. To start something new and stop. To carry a conviction that something more is possible and then let doubt talk you out of it, more than once. I have lived through harder things too: a family split apart in my teenage years, a serious car accident that took months of work to recover from. Faith carried me through both of those, not by removing the difficulty, but by holding me steady inside it.
I am not building this brand from the other side of all that. I am building it from the middle of it, still carrying the same questions, still pressing forward. LaClave Creative is, in part, my own answer to the question I kept asking for too long: what do you hold onto when the work gets heavy and the meaning starts to blur?
What Shapes This
I'm a Christian. That shapes how I see work, and it shapes everything LaClave Creative makes.
I believe the work in front of you matters. Not because of what it pays or who notices, but because of who gave it to you and who you're doing it for. The Bible calls that calling, and I take it seriously. I also believe that on the heaviest days, the meaning of the work is the first thing to slip. You don't lose your willpower. You lose your grip on why any of it matters. A good reminder, placed somewhere you'll see it, can hold that meaning steady for you when you can't hold it yourself.
This brand is for anyone carrying real work into a real life. You may share my faith. You may not. The door is wide. The perspective is biblical, the words are plain, and there are no hidden tests at the register.
The Name
LaClave is my last name. The brand carries it because this is my work and I stand behind it.
It happens that "la clave" means "the key" in Spanish. That's a fitting coincidence, not the reason for the name. But it does describe what these products are trying to do: hand you something solid to hold onto when the work gets heavy and the meaning starts to blur.
What This Brand Makes
Encouraging apparel, artwork, and workspace essentials for working adults who take their work seriously and their calling personally. Every piece is a reminder, made for the desk you sit at on Monday morning, the work no one sees, and the steady kind of strength that doesn't need to announce itself.
Most products are designed with AI tools and finished by hand. They carry the label: Designed with AI, handcrafted with final edits. The thinking, the direction, and the words are all human. A smaller line, Artist-Only, is made entirely by hand from start to finish, with no AI tools at any stage. Every product is clearly labeled so you know exactly what you're holding.
New designs, new collections, and new ways of encouraging the people doing real work in the real world. I’m building this slowly because I want to build it well.
Thanks for being here.
FAQ
What does "LaClave" mean?
LaClave is Matthew's last name, and the brand carries it because this is his work and he stands behind it. It also happens that "la clave" means "the key" in Spanish, a fitting coincidence that describes what these products are built to do: hand you something solid to hold onto when the work gets heavy, and the meaning starts to blur.
What is LaClave Creative?
LaClave Creative is a faith-anchored print-on-demand brand that makes encouraging artwork, apparel, and workspace essentials for working people who take their calling seriously. Do you use AI in your designs?
Sometimes. When AI is part of the design process, the product is labeled: “Designed with AI, handcrafted with final edits.” The concept, direction, and final judgment stay human.
Is faith part of the brand?
Yes. LaClave Creative is built on Christian faith, and that shapes how the brand sees work, calling, and rest. Faith is not hidden, and it is not performed. The door stays wide. You do not need to share the faith to find something honest here, and there are no hidden tests at the register.
